Letter Coding Decoding - Random Sequence

Letter Coding Decoding

In this type, we deal with questions, in which the letters of a word are replaced by certain other letters according to a specific pattern/rule to form a code. You are required to detect the coding pattern/rule and answer the questions that follow, based on that coding pattern/rule.

In Random Letter Coding Decoding : the sequence will not follow a specific pattern of assigning numbers to alphabets. The pattern can be established by various ways but in every case a set of new pattern / principle is involved which has to be done carefully.

Example 1 : In a certain code, ‘EUROPEON’ is written as ‘TDNQDOMN’. Which of the following word will be  coded as NBRMQDZUHSMN.?

(A) CONVERSATION              (B) CONSERVATION          (C)  CONVARSATION                (D)  CONSRAVATION

Answer : (B)

Solution : In this question, we can identify the following relationship:

The word EUROPEON and APPROACH contains 8 letters.

EU = UE, subtract 1 from U and E,

U - 1 =  T

E - 1 = D

RO = OR, subtract 1 from O and R

O - 1 = N

R - 1 = Q

PE = EP, subtract 1 from E and P

E - 1 = D

P - 1 = O

ON = NO subtract 1 from N and O

N - 1 =  M

O - 1 = N

Similarly, in case of CONSERVATION.

CO = OC, O - 1 = N, C - 1 - B

NS= SN, S - 1 = R, N - 1 = M

ER = RE, R - 1 = Q, E - 1 = D

VA = AV, A - 1 = Z, V - 1 = U

TI = IT, I - 1 = H, T - 1 = S

ON = NO, N - 1 = M, O - 1 = N

So, the answer is NBRMQDZUHSMN.

Example 2 : In a certain code, ‘BELIEF’ is written as ‘AFKKDH’. How would ‘SELDOM’ be written in that code?

(A) RDKCHL                 (B) RFKENM                (C) RFKFNO                  (D) TFKENP

Answer : (C)

Solution : In this question, we can identify the following relationship:

  • B - 1 = A
  • E + 1 = F
  • L - 1 = K
  • I + 2  = K
  • E - 1 = D
  • F + 2 = H.
  • Now, apply this relation in the word "SELDOM":

  • S - 1 = R
  • E + 1 + F
  • L - 1 = K
  • D + 2 = F
  • O - 1 = N
  • M + 2 = O.
  • Hence, the answer is RFKFNO.

  • Example 3 : In a certain code, ‘MOTHER’ is written as ‘KPRICS’. How would ‘CLOUDS’ be written in that code?

    (A) RDKCHL                 (B) AMMVB                (C) AMMTB                  (D) AMMVP

    Answer : (B)

    Solution : In this question, we can identify the following relationship:

  • M (13)  - 2 = K
  • O (15) + 1 = P
  • T (20) - 2 = R
  • H (8) + 1  = I
  • E (5) - 2  = C
  • R (18) + 1 = S.
  • Now, apply this relation in the word "CLOUD":

  • C - 2 = A
  • L + 1 = M
  • O - 2 = M
  • U + 1 = V
  • D - 2 = B
  • Hence, the answer is AMMVB.

  • Example 4 : In a certain code, ‘EXAMINATION’ is written as ‘HYDNLODULPQ’. How would ‘CORRECTION’ be written in that code?

    (A) RDKCHLEFTG                 (B) FPUSRFWJRO                (C) FPUSHDWJRO                  (D) FPUSHAMMVP

    Answer : (C)

    Solution : In this question, we can identify the following relationship:

  • E (5)  + 3 = H
  • X (24) + 1 = Y
  • A (1) + 3 = D
  • M (13) + 1  = N
  • I (9) + 3  = L
  • N (14) + 1 = O
  • A (1) + 3 = D
  • T (20) + 1 = U
  • I (9) + 3 = L
  • O (15) + 1 = P
  • N (14) + 3 = Q
  • Now, apply this relation in the word "CORRECTION":

  • C (3)  + 3 = F
  • O (15) + 1 = P
  • R (18) + 3 = U
  • R (18) + 1  = S
  • E (5) + 3  = H
  • C (3) + 1 = D
  • T (20) + 3 = W
  • I (9) + 1 = J
  • O (15) + 3 = R
  • N (14) + 1 = O
  • Hence, the answer is FPUSHDWJRO
